Our Ideal Pomsky:

The ideology of the Pomsky is to produce a small Pomeranian sized dog, with the coloration of the beautiful Siberian Husky. This is achievable with much dedication and careful selection of breeding adults for health and beauty alike. Below are the traits and attributes we breed and strive for in our Pomskies.

 

 

 

Temperament:

Our Pomskies are happy, friendly, and family-safe pets. The overall temperament of a Pomsky is calm and confident, yet ready to follow their families into whatever adventure may come their way. Each puppy has its own unique personality, which makes every dog special and different. The temperament of a puppy is partially genetic, as well as partially environmentally shaped. We breed for sound temperaments, with friendly demeanors and mental stability. Aggression and fearfulness are far from what you will find in our Pomskies. We are proud to offer the happy-go-lucky attitude in all of our puppies. Our Pomskies are playful and energetic and able to adapt well to times of necessary confinement and solitude. The Pomsky thrives in a busy household with an active family, as well as with a single owner in a quieter setting. The environmental encouragement and socialization of a well-rounded puppy starts as early as the day they are born. Intelligence:

Both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky are rarely outmatched for their intelligence ratings. The breeding foundation for Pomeranians was originally to be “trick dogs” or performing dogs. Still, to this day, the Pomeranian is quick-witted and ever eager to please their families by learning an array of tricks and commands. The Siberian Husky is indeed a clever and mindful breed whose natural intelligence was sought after by those who bred and trained them to harness and pull. The current Siberian Husky may have come a long way from the original days of pulling sleds and doing manual labor, but their intelligence and willingness to work remain strong. As a result, the Pomsky is easily trained in the basic commands and excels at tricks. The Pomsky is a great candidate for learning and competing in the canine sports of Dog Agility, Obedience, and FlyBall. An obedient dog enhances the owner-dog bond by encouraging trust. The more effort spent on obedience with your new puppy enables you both to partake in adventures safely, enhancing the joy of spending time with your puppy.

Energy Level:

The energy level and exercise needs of the Pomsky can vary, depending on the adult size of the Pomsky and from which generation of breeding it belongs to. The larger a Pomsky is, the more space and exercise is required. The average exercise needs of a Pomsky should be 1-2 hours of exercise per day; easily achieved by two 1 hour walks. Please note the average dog (and person) requires a minimum of 1 hour of exercise per day. More is always welcomed and encouraged, as a healthy lifestyle for you and your pet benefits you in many ways. The intensity of the exercise will vary on the attributes mentioned above. We encourage plenty of running exercise during the 1-2 hours required. Were you aware that mental exercise can play a role as well? During inclement weather, try mentally stimulating your Pomsky by learning a new trick, or playing a fun game inside, that requires a bit of thinking.

Markings and Colors:

The Pomsky hybrid comes in an array of colors and markings. The most sought-after color and marking combination is the popular Siberian Husky coloration of Grey/White body markings with the typical mask. We love this combination and find our other colors and markings just as beautiful. The Pomsky can come in an array of beautiful colors such as; Black, White, Grey, Brown, Red, Copper, Blue Merle, Wolf Sable, Blonde and much more. The typical mask of the Siberian Husky may or may not be present on a Pomsky. We excel at providing stunning pure White Pomskies. Are you searching for a specific color and marking combination? Eye Color:

Pomskies have a magical variation of eye color. The most stunning colors we offer are Blue, Green, Amber, and Brown. We even offer Pomskies with unilateral colored eyes; meaning each eye is a different color. Also available is the partial coloration of the iris with splashes of another color.

Fur and Coat:

The Pomsky has a double-thickness fur coat and is plush as it is soft to the touch. The Pomsky has a thickly-haired tail that hangs back over the rump, with a slight curl to one side. The double thickness of their fur coat means that there are two hair densities and lengths present on the body. The hair closest to the body is thicker and shorter, forming the “undercoat”. These hairs are packed together, providing insulation against the heat and the cold. The undercoat protects the skin from sunburn, as well as keeping the skin hydrated.

 

The “overcoat” or “guard hairs” is the top layer of the fur coat and those hairs are longer, stronger, and coarser. These hairs are much fewer in number than those found in the undercoat. The guard hairs protect the body from dirt and snow and are used in body language displays. The undercoat of the Pomsky is typically shed 1-2 times per year, in what is called an “undercoat blow-out”. The period of shedding for the undercoat is short but intense. The Pomsky sheds the majority of the thicker, shorter hairs within 2-3 weeks. Daily brushing during this period will help eliminate shed hairs from being found around the house. The Pomeranian has, in general, a thicker and longer fur coat than a Siberian Husky.

 

Yet the Pomsky has a fur coat similar to the Siberian Husky, with slightly more density. The Pomsky rarely has the extremely thick coat of a Pomeranian. Brushing and grooming requirements of the Pomsky are low to minimal. We recommend a full body brushing 1-2 times per month, with more frequent brushings around the face and behind the ears, where hairs are finer and the odd tangle may occur. The double-thickness fur coat of the Pomsky is an excellent deterrent for dirt/dust/wetness and is generally self-maintaining. Were you aware that your new puppy will give himself a bath by licking his fur in order to keep himself clean, much like a cat?

Size and Weight:

The joy of the Pomsky hybrid is that every litter and generation offers something a little bit different. The size and weight of a Pomsky vary depending on a number of factors; the generation of Pomsky, the size of their mother and father, the litter size, and their gender. In Siberian Huskies, the size difference between mature males and females is quite noticeable -with some females being 2-3 inches shorter and up to 15 lbs. lighter. With Pomeranians, the males and females are similar sizes, with no real variation between the two sexes. In our Pomskieswe find that there is a slight size difference between males and females, with males being slightly heavier and taller.

 

First-generation Pomskies are also known as the first filial generation or “F1 generation”. This means that one parent is 100% Siberian Husky and the other parent is 100% Pomeranian, resulting in offspring being 50% Pomeranian and 50% Siberian Husky. F1 generation Pomskies vary in size, as one would imagine, as there is a large size difference between the two parents. Some puppies will take on more of the Siberian Husky size and characteristics, while some puppies will take on more of the Pomeranian size and characteristics. On average an F1 Pomsky will weigh between 10-25lbs. Rarely are puppies below 10 lbs. and above 25 lbs. for this generation. By the age of 6 weeks old, better estimates of the weights of individual puppies are available.

A second filial generation or an “F2 generation” Pomsky is the breeding of an F1 male to an F1 female. This generation is smaller and will provide puppies with more predictable sizes and markings. F2 generation puppies vary in size from 10-20lbs, depending on the parents who have been bred. We are actively working towards offering Pomskies under 10 lbs in weight and will have some amazing puppies available soon. Please note that the weights and sizes of puppies cannot be guaranteed, as larger or smaller puppies may result from this hybridization. We strive to place appropriately sized puppies to match the lifestyle of their new owners and often puppies are not placed up for adoption until 4-6 weeks old, to better gauge the final adult size.
